Day 16: Musical Taste

Music. . . The very thing that can give voice to our emotions, communicate a story, bring vibrance to the quiet, and fill us with such happiness. There is so much to be said about the power of music.

There is not a day that goes by that does not contain some sort of music, it is almost impossible to avoid. Because music cannot be avoided, it has an incredible power to influence our lives. We develop a music taste early on in our lives that shifts as we grow. It is a unique preference from everyone else around us, what we like might not be what someone else likes. Our favorite songs and artists create this sort of music thumbprint.

Listening to music and connecting to specific songs is an incredibly personal experience. The songs we love the most say a lot about who we are, what we are feeling, and the things we are going through in life. We use songs as a way to express our lives in a way we might not be able to do ourselves. They allow us to express ourselves in such a beautiful conglomeration of voices and melodies.

Personally, music is a huge part of my life. There isn’t a day that goes by that I do not play music at some point. I write to music (I’m listening to some of my favorite songs now), I do school to music, I play music while I get ready, I bought a special waterproof speaker to play music in the shower. Music is a very important part of my day.

Never underestimate the power of music to be able to communicate so much in such a short window of time. The lyrics, the instruments, everything in a song has the power to tell such a vibrant and wonderful narrative.

For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated with using music to reflect what I am feeling in my life. I create playlists for certain periods of my life, such as one I recently made called “Summer ’19”, in order to remember memories or feelings I had during that period. And yes I have created playlists for certain people in my life, encapsulating them and my memories of them.

Just like photography, music is a way of communicating emotions and moments in time. It has the power to impact and to change. It is an artful just as expressive and can influence and change our perspectives.

Let me know in the comments what songs you currently have on repeat and be sure to check out my Spotify account at “StrengthOfAtlantis” to see more of my playlists. Here are a few of my current favorite songs:

Until Next Time,
Lillian Merritt
